2009 looks to be an interesting year in movies. I like this. There are many movies that have yet to be released that I look forward to watching. I have seen several movies so far-as I should since it is already near the end of May! Here is a rundown on the movies I've seen:
Underworld-Rise of the Lycans: While this movie wasn't as good as the other two, it certainly wasn't bad either. It is, after all, only fair that we get to see why the Lycans are so loathed in the earlier installments of the Underworld franchise. I really liked the actors cast in this movie as well as the costumes and sets. Everyone looks utterly miserable as I would imagine they might have been given the fact that everything was cold and muddy and desolate. I almost felt bad for the humans having to pay tribute to the vampires to keep everyone "protected" as it were. Also, it was good to see the Lycans finally get away from Victor. No wonder they were so pissed in the first two movies! On a personal note, I think Bill Nighy should be cast in every single movie that is made. I love him and think he's a wonderful, wonderful actor. If you don't know him then you should Google him and look at his resume. If you haven't seen a movie with Bill Nighy in it then I am pretty sure you live in a hole under a rock.
Watchmen: I had to read the trade paperback for my freshman English class in college. I didn't get into comics as a kid but since I had to read it for class, I dove in head first with gusto. Guess what? I freakin' LOVED that book! I remember my professor (whose name I have since forgotten-bad me!) as this tiny gal who was a huge fangirl. She was one tube of black lipstick away from being goth and she would wax poetic about how this graphic novel could NEVER be turned into a movie because the technology wasn't there. Flash forward a few years down the road and here we are! Zack Snyder luckily got his hands on this project. He is a big fan of Watchmen and stayed almost too true to the book. This, however, does not bother me. I do think there were times when he could have shaved off a few seconds here and there for pacing but on the whole, it didn't bother me. I do know that there is going to be an even longer cut that will most likely be released on DVD. I am anxious to see it. I do recommend this movie. I also recommend the trade paperback.
Monsters vs. Aliens: This is the latest from Dreamworks. This is the same company who brought us Shrek. I actually saw this movie twice. Both times in 3D. This was a delightful and witty movie. I thought the casting was really well done and the writing was really clever. There were jokes for the kids and the grown-ups. I definitely recommend this one!
X-Men Origins-Wolverine: Okay-so like I am totally in love with Hugh Jackman (and yes, my husband is very well aware of this!). Hugh and I have enjoyed a very long love affair that dates all the way back to Kate and Leopold. Having said that, I have to say that I didn't give a hang about the plot as much as I just wanted two hours of Hugh running around being all badass. I really liked the first two X-Men movies and I thought the third one was sort of a joke really. A Wolverine movie had been in talks since the first X-Men so there was no surprise when it got made. I did like the movie but I didn't love it. I thought that the plot got dragged down from trying to show off all the other characters and then not giving us enough of them to decide if we like them or not. Deadpool and Gambit were killer but you didn't get to see them enough. I think that if the movie had solely focused on Wolverine and Sabertooth and their relationship and everything that happens to them, then the movie would have been lots better. Liev Schreiber was great as Sabertooth. He was very intense and angry and wonderful. Mr. Jackman was great as Wolverine but this Wolverine was a bit soft. By the time he decided to not be a mercenary anymore, he had almost turned into-dare I say it-a wuss. I wanted angry Wolverine!! Still, it is a decent popcorn movie. I don't feel like I lost two hours of my life for watching it but I wanted more badass and less pussycat.
Star Trek: I have been a Trekkie since I was a little kid. Having said that, I was dumbfounded when I heard that they were talking about doing another Star Trek movie. My first question was "Why?" and my second question was "How?" Captain Kirk was killed off in Generations and we've lost Scotty and Bones. The cast of Next Generation had finished off their story lines. And did anyone want to see a Deep Space Nine movie? Okay-I probably would watch it. I admit it! But then I hear wonderful news-JJ Abrams was going to be in the captain's chair!!! I love LOST and Fringe so I hoped that he would do a good job. And-he did. This is the best movie of the year so far. I've seen it twice and I will probably see it at least once more. It is as perfect a movie as you could make. People who are Trekkies and people who've never seen Star Trek at all can completely enjoy this movie. The casting is impeccable. The writing is wonderful. There is so much that I love about this movie. It is a really great sci-fi movie all on its own. The fact that it is a Star Trek movie (and an odd numbered one that doesn't chew) is a bonus. Definitely a must go see!!!
Angels and Demons: This is the second movie installment of Dan Brown's novels. This novel was actually the first novel that introduces us to Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon. I actually like this book a little better than The DaVinci Code but I liked that book too. People really ripped on The DaVinci Code when it was first released not to mention all the churches that went into a tailspin about a work of fiction. It wasn't a bad movie. You have to pay attention to it and most people don't like to think while they are watching movies. Angels has Robert Langdon going to Rome after the death of the pope to help expose the Illuminati's plot to get revenge on the Catholic Church. He is joined by Vittoria who has her own reasons for being there to assist. The movie did cut out some plot points in the book that I think would have helped it along a bit but on the whole, I really liked this movie. If you liked the book, you'll probably like the movie. Enjoy!
That is all I have for now! I am off to see Terminator Salvation and will give you my review. I'll be back!
